"I Can Only Wear Gold Jewelry" – The Truth About Jewelry Allergies

[ad_1]

I can only wear gold jewelry, everything else breaks me out.” How many times did I hear that exact phrase from my mother when I was a child? Every time I would give her jewelry that was her response.

Why does everything but gold break my mother out? Is that statement even true? When I started designing jewelry over ten years ago I decided to find out. I wanted to design jewelry for my mom that she could wear without fear of a breakout. Now I am going to let you in on what I have discovered.

My mother, like many people, develops contact dermatitis when her skin comes in contact with some types of jewelry. Her dermatitis is a result of an allergic reaction to the nickel found in many types of jewelry. Nickel allergies are very common, in fact one out of every seven people are likely to suffer from a nickel allergy. More often, women tend to suffer from nickel allergies than men. Allergy treatment can help with the symptoms of a nickel allergy. Unfortunately once the allergy has developed, a person will remain sensitive to nickel for the rest of their life.

Nickel is found in many types of costume jewelry, especially those that are mass-produced. It may also be found in other everyday items like coins, zippers, eyeglass frames, and cellphones.

So why is my mom allergic to nickel, you may ask. For some reason, which science still does not understand, her body has mistaken nickel (or similar metals like cobalt) as a threat. In response to that threat, her body causes an immune response (aka allergic reaction) to get rid of the threat. This reaction causes her to breakout in an itchy rash. But others could have a more severe reaction to nickel.

Now that I knew what was causing my mother’s breakout, I set out to find out which types of jewelry did not contain nickel.

First I looked at gold jewelry. Generally speaking, yellow gold (above 14 karat) will not cause an allergic reaction. However white gold may. White gold alloys contain nickel and other “white” metals to produce its silver coloring. One out of every nine people will react to the nickel in white gold.

Another form of gold jewelry is gold filled or “GF” jewelry. Gold filled jewelry metal is created when a base metal is coated with a layer of gold. Gold filled differs from gold-plated by the amount of gold applied. The layer used in gold filled jewelry is typically 50 to 100 time thicker that the layer used to coat gold-plated products.

Next I looked at silver jewelry. For those who are nickel sensitive, fine silver and sterling silver are great choices for “white” metals.

Fine silver is by definition 99.9% pure silver. Jewelry is generally not made of fine silver because the metal is extremely soft and does not withstand normal wear and tear well.

Most silver jewelry is made using sterling silver. Sterling silver is by definition 92.5% pure silver. In most cases, the remaining 7.5% metal is copper. Copper is infused to harden the silver and make it more durable. I use this type of sterling silver in my jewelry designs it is a great metal for nickel allergic people. Sometimes you can distinguish sterling silver by a “925” mark found on the jewelry. This is common on manufactured pieces, but may not be present on artisan jewelry.

Some other metals that are considered safe for people with nickel allergies are:

Copper – Copper jewelry is generally considered pure and not mixed with nickel or nickel alloys.

Platinum – Platinum jewelry contains 95% platinum and 5% of a secondary metal typically iridium.

Titanium – Titanium jewelry is both hypoallergenic and durable. It is a highly recommended metal for those who suffer from nickel allergies.

Niobium – This is a relatively new metal in the jewelry industry. It is a rare earth metal that can be anodized (naturally coated with beautiful colors). Like titanium, this metal is recommended for nickel allergy sufferers, especially those looking for a pop of color.

Since I have given you a list of safe metals, I thought I would also give you a list of metal terms to watch out for when you are shopping for jewelry.

Fashion or costume jewelry typically has base metals that include nickel. Sometimes these metals are plated; however that plating will wear off over time exposing the skin to the base metals. If you choose a plated metal, remember that it will need to be re-plated regularly.

Some have suggested that brass may be a hypoallergenic option. However my research has suggested that brass is sometimes alloyed with small amounts of nickel or even lead to strengthen the metal.

German silver or nickel silver is a metal to stay away from where jewelry is concerned. German silver does not contain any silver. The silver refers to the silver coloration of the metal. The color is derived from a combination of nickel, zinc, lead, and tin found within the alloy.

Surgical or stainless steel – Surgical grade stainless steel is made to be in the human body. However, the steel alloy contains between eight and twelve percent nickel. I have heard varying reports about how safe this metal is for people with nickel allergies. Since the steel alloy does contain nickel, I would tend to avoid it, but some people swear by it.

If you do buy a piece of jewelry and are concerned that it may contain nickel, commercial test kits are available online. These kits contain chemicals that react in the presence of nickel.

Doing a little research can prevent a nickel allergy attack and still allow you to wear beautiful jewelry.

Why Weight Loss Diets Fail

[ad_1]

There doesn’t seem to be a law that a new year must be accompanied by feelings of weight-guilt, but January/February dismay seems to be pretty universal.

Every year, year in and year out, a new year reminds us it’s time to suffer, feel guilty or both. And so we join in this annual ritual of self-abuse.

But let me ask you this: The struggle and strain to lose weight has been going on every year for centuries. After all those years of effort, shouldn’t we be winning?

I mean, an avalanche of all the diet books in print would flatten a smallish city. But all that information, even if strictly applied, will provide–at best–no more than temporary success.

For instance, The Biggest Loser television show flogged competitors through almost superhuman efforts to lose weight. The motivated contestants did whatever they were told to do to reach the magical goal of slim and trim.

After they reach the promised land, after all that training, effort and suffering, you’d think contestants would be good to go for the rest of their lives. But you would be wrong. By about a mile.

You never see reunions of Biggest Loser alums. Most, if not all, the alums regained the weight they lost, and sometimes even more.

Why does the weight always come back? Because all the weight-loss hoopla, so heavily promoted by dietitians and doctors as a sure path to skinny-jeans heaven, throws our bodies into a very deep ditch of wounded body parts unable to figure out which way is up.

Our bodies know if they don’t step in to save the day, as in getting everything back into balance, we’re going down. Disease, even death, await.

So, an all-body call-to-arms goes out, and body parts join the battle, coordinating their efforts in a big-time push to get everything back on track. And the lost pounds come piling back. Why?

Here’s how it goes: By taking the usual, count-calories, etc., approach to weight loss, you dumped muscle, not fat. Since life depends on healthy muscles, such as the heart, your body works overtime to recover lost muscle. And you’re back where you started.

But, but, but, you cry in dismay, does that mean I’ll never be able to lose weight and keep it off?

Not at all. That’s actually pretty easy-peasy stuff. I cover the whole business in my Moving to Health program.

Well, you may counter, if it’s so easy, why don’t you just tell us? And you ask because everybody’s been brainwashed into believing health and weight loss are about magic bullets, not about understanding what’s going on. All I have to offer is understanding, so work with me here.

Losing weight is not rocket science, but getting people to change their understanding of how it works is a killer. That’s nobody’s fault; it’s just the way things are.

The weight loss industry rakes in billions and billions of dollars a year, and they don’t look kindly on anybody who talks the way I do. They keep machetes always at the ready, the better to protect their mountain of money.

I don’t want to start a fight with a whole gang of bullies, which is scary. But I do want to help people; I just have to wait for them to realize they need my help.

Here’s how it goes: We are all unique, one-of-a-kind beings. One-size-fits-all diets don’t work for unique people. So talk about losing weight must take the unique wonder of us into account; a quick ten-point list doesn’t come close.

But I can give you two basic truths that will probably contradict everything you’ve been taught: Counting calories doesn’t get you anywhere, and you have to eat fat to lose fat.

I kid you not.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Identity Theft Protection Services?

[ad_1]

When you have secured some identity protection arrangement with a reputable company, you can have a peaceful night’s rest in the knowledge that your social security number will never be used to defraud you. Many people panic when they learn that they may have made some mistakes and revealed their personal information to the wrong persons. When you have secured the services of a good company, you can always consult the staff of that company for some advice.

Protection companies are always helpful when it comes to handling intricate matters that arise when colleges, employers, and government agencies come into contact with our crucial personal information. One of the best ways of catching fraudsters is through tracking the possible ways through which the personal information can be used. As an individual, panic may come in the way of your rational thinking, in which case the protection company will come to your rescue.

It has been proven that personal identity fraud reduces dramatically when there is a commanding presence of personal information protection companies. Residents of Wisconsin, Ohio and Nashville know this since this is where the survey was carried out.

It is through credit monitoring services that are provided by these service providers that excessive damage is controlled. In some cases where the service provider is highly successful, their efforts might lead to the arrest and prosecution of the gangs that engage in these activities. The main problem with this approach is that many of these gangs and individuals succeed because of the assistance that they get from employees of the companies that handle your personal information for legitimate purposes.

Although the services offered are always very helpful, it is not a guarantee that you are going to remain completely safe from fraudsters. This is because the information that leads to identity theft comes from many sources most of the time. Another disadvantage of these services is that they expose you to unnecessary scrutiny and disclosure of so much personal information as the company tries to unravel the mystery of your identity theft. Therefore, try this out and you will be satisfied.

What Is Medical Payment Data?

[ad_1]

Many people are confused when they get a copy of their credit report and see a collections for “Medical Payment Data”. This is seen when someone obtains their credit report with a third party involved, such as applying for a mortgage or at the car dealership. This would not be shown if you were to obtain your report on your own without a third party.

When you see Medical Payment Data on your report, you do not contact them. Because in reality there is no “them” to contact as it is just a term denoting a medical collections on your credit report.

This is done in order to protect the individual’s name requesting the credit report, due to federal privacy laws. What your next step would be is to call the credit bureaus that list the collections on medical report. When you call the credit reporting agencies, they can inform you who currently owns the debt.

Once you receive the information from the credit reporting agencies you can contact the medical collection agency directly. This is because they are the owners of the debt and the hospital is out of the picture now. It is not fully known how the credit agencies treat different debts, but it is thought that hospital debt is not as bad on your credit report.

Certainly if you are working with a human reviewing your application such as at a small bank or car dealership you may have some leeway with having medical payment data on your credit report. This is because it may show you had extenuating circumstances. This especially helps when no other collections are on the report.

If you feel this is harming your credit profile you can work with the collection agency in removing the bad mark off of your report. Usually the longer it has gone unpaid, the worse it gets, to a point. When a collection is a few years old it has already done its damage. If you can pay the collection agency right after they obtain it from the hospital you may be able to avoid it going onto your credit report at all.

The older the debt is, the more, the less you should offer to pay off the debt. A debt that is multiple years old you only may offer a fraction of the original bill. If the debt is new, you may pay the full amount or close to it. The best thing to do is have the ding completely removed, this would help your score the most. If not you could at least have the bill on your report marked paid in full.

Tony Robbins – The Power of Questions

[ad_1]

“Questions provide the key to unlocking our unlimited potential,” says Robbins. “Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.”

It is in being honest with yourself and having an open internal dialogue that you will place yourself on the path to success. “You and I have that same power at our disposal every moment of the day,” says Robbins. “At the moment, the questions that we ask ourselves can shape our perception of who we are, what we’re capable of, and what we’re willing to do to achieve our dreams.”

How do you really want to live?

What gets you most excited?

When do you feel stuck?

What kind of person will you have to become in order to achieve all that you want?

These are some of the questions Robbins suggests you ask yourself and answer honestly. “The genuine quality of life comes from consistent, quality questions,” says Robbins. If you ask yourself a great question, your mind will automatically focus on finding better answers and solutions. Conversely, “If you ask a terrible question, you’ll get a terrible answer,” he says. “Your mental computer is ever ready to serve you, and whatever question you give it, it will surely come up with an answer.”

Throughout his career, Robbins has been driven by a single question – what makes the difference in the quality of people’s lives? He has since come to realize that it is what we ask of ourselves and how well we look inside to find the answers that plays a key role. Not only does this help us understand our own internal motivations, but it also helps provide focus to our thoughts.

Every night before going to sleep, Robbins suggests asking yourself the following three questions:

What have I learned today?

What have I enjoyed today?

What have I improved or contributed today?

Simple questions, yet with powerful effects. “Most people never feel secure because they are always worried that they will lose their job, lose the money they already have, lose their spouse, lose their health, and so on,” says Robbins. “The only true security in life comes from knowing that every single day you are improving yourself in some way, that you are increasing the caliber of who you are and that you are valuable to your company, your friends, and your family.” In asking yourself the above three questions, you can work on improving yourself each and every day.

Every individual has the right to live a life of fulfillment and questions are the key to opening that door.

“The power was given to you at the moment you were born,” says Robbins. “Its source is unlimited. And when you seize it, you’ll have everything you need to create a life filled with more passion, excitement, confidence, and joy than you’ve ever dreamed. Isn’t it time to unleash the power within and claim your extraordinary potential?”

This fast paced 7 minute video will enlighten you on the Power of asking yourself the right questions. Putting this simple but extremely powerful concept to work in your own life will change your life in ways you never thought possible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr7Wkz7W7Vs

This short video below has some examples of what we ask ourselves and by simply changing the question you are instantly empowered.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h7Sc53ZbHE

The Power Of Questions Questions are an excellent way to access your subconscious mind, and the process is a simple one.

Suppose you are in a situation where you want to make a good impression. You walk up to the person you want to impress and blurt out a tactless remark. Instantly you realize what you’ve done.

If you ask yourself a negative question like, “Why am I always such an idiot?” your brain will come up with all sorts of reasons in order to answer that question. This is of absolutely no help to you, either in the present situation or at any time in your life.

If instead you ask yourself, “How can I recover from this mess?” your brain will sort through your memory banks to come up with some strategies to redeem your blunder.

In other words, your brain will always present an answer to any question you ask yourself. The answer may not necessarily be true, but your brain feels obligated to respond to your questions and will do its best to present you with some kind of answer, whether feasible or not.

How can you use this brain function to improve your life?

Train yourself to ask only positive questions.

Questions like “Why am I so talented?” and “How did I get to be so lucky?” will give you far more positive results than those that presuppose a critical answer. Often the brain recognizes that many of these questions are rhetorical, in other words they don’t actually require an answer, but the impact is still positive. The questions imply that you are talented or you are lucky, thereby reinforcing the notion. In this sense they function the same way as affirmations.

WHY Questions

Asking, “Why do I always fail?” will inevitably lead to answers like “Because you’re a loser!”

“How can I succeed in this venture?” will lead to creative and useful answers.

Why questions are often circular in nature and are not utilized in this particular process. Replace them with questions like *How can I do this? *What do I need to do next? *When do I need to finish this? *Where do I need to be right now? *What do I need to learn here?

Daily Questions

Anthony Robbins popularized the use of questions in his excellent tape programs, Personal Power and Personal Power II. Tony devised three sets of questions: one for mornings, one for night, and another set to use when dealing with problems throughout the day.

1. The Morning Questions

Answer the following questions every morning to set yourself up for a positive day.

1.What am I most happy about in my life right now? What about that makes me happy? How does that make me feel? (Repeat these two secondary questions after each main question)

2.What am I most excited about in my life right now?

3.What am I most proud of in my life right now?

4.What am I most grateful for in my life right now?

5.What am I enjoying most in my life right now?

6.What am I most committed to in my life right now?

7.Who do I love? Who loves me?

2. The Evening Questions

Ask yourself these questions at the end of each day before sleep.

1.What have I given today?

2.What did I learn today?

3.How has today added to my life?

4.How can I use today as an investment in my future?

5.What did I do today towards reaching my goals?

6.Optional: Add the morning questions.

3. The Problem Solving Questions

These questions are helpful when working towards a goal and/or encountering an obstacle.

1.What do I need to do today towards reaching my goals?

2.How can I become successful and enjoy the process?

3.What can I learn from this experience?

4.What do I respect about this person?

5.What’s actually funny about this situation that I haven’t noticed before?

6.What’s great in my life right now?

7.How can I make this happen right now and enjoy the process?

The three sets of questions can be printed in a large font on separate sheets of paper and displayed in your work space.

This valuable lesson comes from notes taken while spending 2 weeks in Kona Hawaii At one of Tony’s seminars,

So I want to give thanks to Tony Robbins

Respectfully, George Walters

Considering Taking Saw Palmetto for High Blood Pressure?

[ad_1]

Even though certain herbs such as St. John’s Wort may not be ideal for treating hypertension, some herbs such as saw palmetto for high blood pressure may be an option for those interested in using a more natural remedy to treat their condition.

What is saw palmetto and how can it lower blood pressure? Saw palmetto (botanical name: Serenoa Repens) is a small ever-green palm plant that is found in America. The berries of the plant contain the active ingredients used for herbal medicine. Although it is recommended and primarily used for its effectiveness in treating an enlarged prostrate in men caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), saw palmetto for high blood pressure treatment isn’t completely uncommon.

Reasons why this herb is used to treat high blood pressure, in some cases, is because it is a diuretic herb that contains active anti-androgen properties that help reduce water retention and control high blood pressure. Diuretic herbs have a direct effect on the body’s cells and tissues. They increase blood flow to the kidneys, which in turn increase urination, allowing excess salt and toxins to be flushed out of the kidneys, which helps to lower overall blood pressure.

Keep in mind, however, like water pills (prescribed diuretic medications), saw palmetto and other blood pressure reducing diuretic herbs, such as ginger, are generally used to treat mild cases of high blood pressure, and are used in combination with dietary changes, exercise, and possibly with other high blood pressure medications to control hypertension.

Although you will need to adopt other lifestyle changes to help reduce your blood pressure when taking saw palmetto for high blood pressure, you should know that some studies have found this herb to interact with certain antihypertensive drugs, such as terazosin, which are used to treat high blood pressure.

In addition, due to its potential hormonal active ingredients, saw palmetto may also alter the effects of hormone replacement therapy and hormonal birth control. Therefore, while saw palmetto may not interfere with all drugs, you should speak with your doctor to ensure this is a safe and effective treatment option for you.

Saw palmetto is taken orally and is available in tablet, capsule, tea and natural berry form. You can find this herb at your local health store. Both men and women may take this herb, although, due to the fact that it has the potential to affect hormones, pregnant women should not take this drug. Saw palmetto should only be taken as directed by the package, or as recommended by a qualified herbalist or health care provider.

You should also be aware that while saw palmetto for high blood pressure is a possible treatment, in very rare cases some side effects of increased blood pressure have been reported by patients taking this herb. Other rare side effects include headaches, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, decreased libido, impotence and urinary retention. Therefore, always make sure you speak to your health care provider before using any herb or other form of treatment for your high blood pressure.

Why Do Helicopters Hover One Skid Low?

[ad_1]

I have been asked a lot times why helicopters hover with one skid low. Helicopters with a counter clockwise rotating rotor system hover left skid low and helicopters with a clockwise rotating rotor system hover right skid low.

Now there are two factors to consider in order to explain this phenomenon. The first one is what we call translating tendency or tail rotor drift. This factor causes a sideways pull on the fuselage of the helicopter and in the case of a counter clockwise rotating rotor system this pull will be to the right. To explain it very briefly it is the result of the tail rotor force acting at the tip of the tail boom counter acting the torque reaction which wants to rotate the fuselage clockwise.

In order to counter this sideways pull results in the second factor this is tail rotor roll. To counter the sideway movement to the right the cyclic needs to be positioned slightly to the left which will tilt the Total Rotor Thrust to the left thereby inducing a horizontal component of Total Rotor Thrust to the left acting on the same level as the plane of rotation.

Now normally in small helicopters the tail rotor which produces a force to the right when viewing the helicopter from the back acts below the plane of rotation. This force which counter act the torque reaction forms a couple with the horizontal force to the left which was the result of tilting the cyclic (Total Rotor Thrust) to the left. To put it a bit simpler imagine a horizontal line with one force acting to the left and above the line and another force acting to the right and below the line. The two forces acting against each other and not on the same line will produce a rolling moment.

As I mentioned this is just a brief explanation for a not so straight forward aerodynamic principle.

One last comment when it comes to tail rotor roll is that it is most prominent during the hover off course because it is related to the amount of torque that the helicopter develops. That is why a counter clockwise rotating helicopter tends to drift to the right as it transitions from forward flight back to the hover because power or torque is slowly applied as the speed decreases.

How to Conclude a Book Review

[ad_1]

Writing a book review is great especially if you learn something new out of it. But when it comes into concluding your book review, how will manage it?

In book reviews, the conclusion is designed to reflect the focus of the rest of the piece. The idea is to leave the reader with a clearly-articulated and thoroughly polished (with the help of a quality grammar software) final assessment that brings together all the ideas you’ve presented throughout the review.

What components should go into your book reviews’ conclusions?

  1. A restatement of the topic sentence. This helps refresh the main direction of your review for the reader and is a more preferable opening sentence for your conclusion, compared to the usual approach of giving space to less-important issues, such as book format and similar details.
  2. A summary of previously stated ideas. Put emphasis on the primary qualities and materials of the book being reviewed for your summary, rather than arbitrary details (regardless of how notable they might be). It helps sum up your discussion for the reader, setting a better context for your final statement.
  3. A memorable and thought-provoking closing sentence that imparts your final recommendation. Designed to cement your recommendation to the reader, it lets you leave a final thought that endorses your general opinion of the book. You can write this as a declarative sentence or in the form of a question, for effect. Pay some extra attention here: the more elegant and impactful it is, the more likely the reader will heed your advice.

The Best Five Bands of the 1960s

[ad_1]

#1 THE BEATLES

No surprises here. I look upon people who don’t understand the greatness of The Beatles with disdain. Ignorance is not bliss, it is just ignorance. And not understanding the greatness and the importance of The Beatles music is certainly ignorance.

Where to start? 1968’s self titled double album (known as The White Album) is the ultimate Beatles album in my view. 30 tracks covering almost every style of music imaginable. That being said, it may not be the best album to start with if you are new to the band. Perhaps 1969’s Abbey Road (the final album they recorded) would be a better entry point as it’s more fluid and it has the most “modern” sound of any of their albums.

Regardless of where you start with the greatest band of all time, the important thing is that you attain the following albums: A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be. You should also make sure you get Past Masters Vol. 2 as it includes a lot of The Beatles best singles that were never included on any album. If that’s not enough for you, get the rest of their stuff too. In some ways it’s all great, even the stuff that isn’t that great (like 1964’s Beatles for Sale for example which includes very cool songs like “I’ll Follow the Sun” that you can’t really get anywhere else.)

#2 THE ROLLING STONES

Not a lot of surprise here either although I had a much harder time making this selection as a lot of The Stones best work is actually in the ’70s and there’s a lot of great competition. Albums like Let It Bleed still stand up today as among the best rock n roll albums of all time.

#3 THE WHO

Much like the Stones, a lot of their best work actually came in the 1970s but that being said I believe they form the “holy trinity” of great British rock bands of the 1960s along with The Beatles and The Stones thus they must be included at #3. Tommy is sometimes maligned these days but it really is quite an album. And many of The Who’s singles are extremely good. Also, I don’t think any band topped them as far as live performances go.

#4 THE BEACH BOYS

Pet Sounds alone is probably enough to get them this position but they also recorded a lot of extremely memorable songs not included on that album, the best of them being the incredible “Good Vibrations.”

#5 THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

They recorded only three albums but each of them were excellent. I most recommend their final album: 1968’s double album Electric Ladyland which is a real psychedelic masterpiece.

Should You Buy A High Flow Catalytic Converter?

[ad_1]

If you are in the market for a new catalytic converter, and are a performance enthusiast, chances are that you will be considering buying a high flow catalytic converter. If you aren’t, then you should read this article, and consider the benefits.

Let me tell you what this article is not about. I’m not going to talk about boring OEM universal catalytic converters that you put on your moms minivan. I’m going to be talking about high performance parts whose sole purpose is to increase the horsepower and torque of your vehicle. If you are just searching for a replacement cat for your 92 Chevy Cavalier, then reading this article is not worth your time. So let’s get into it, shall we?

I’m going to assume that you have a high performance vehicle, or at the very least, a stock vehicle that you plan on modifying. If you aren’t familiar with high flow catalytic converters, let me explain what they are and how they help your car gain horsepower.

First, the point of the catalytic converter is to convert toxic engine exhaust gases into cleaner more environmentally friendly substances. This is done using a catalyst inside of the device, hence the name “Catalytic” converter. Anyway, the problem with OEM or aftermarket OEM cats is that they restrict airflow. This is mainly because they are built to work as effectively as possible, and have little focus on increasing the power of your vehicle. Your 95 Honda Civic wasn’t built to be a high performance machine from the factory, but that’s not going to stop you from changing that! The High Flow Catalytic Converter was created with performance in mind and ultimately it lets more air flow unrestricted through your entire exhaust system. The best scenario would be to have no cat at all, and many people who race their cars do not have a catalytic converter, but if you are looking to have your car be street legal, then your car must have a cat in order to pass emissions tests during inspection.

So how does a high flow catalytic converter help your cars performance and should you buy one? Well first, let me ask you, do you have aftermarket headers or exhausts on your vehicle? If not, then a high flow cat is not the thing to be buying just yet. I think of a high performance cat as the third part to your aftermarket exhaust system. The most important piece of your exhaust system is the Cat-Back. This is all of the piping that comes after your catalytic converter. The second most important piece is a high flow exhaust manifold, or headers. These come before the cat. Without one or two of those pieces installed on your car, I would not purchase a high performance cat as it is the least important and will not be as effective if not combined with a high flow exhaust system.

If you do have an aftermarket exhaust system, then a high flow catalytic converter might be the logical next piece to purchase. The more freely your exhaust gases flow from your engine, the more power your car will make. If you have a high performance cat-back, and headers, then a regular cat will cause a bottleneck in the airflow, and that is something we don’t want. By installing a high performance cat, you will increase the air flow, and gain more power. How much power will you gain? Well that depends on your engine size. Larger V6 and V8 engines will see a higher increase in power than i4s. This is because they produce much more exhaust gases. But for simplicity, we’ll say adding a high flow cat can increase your horsepower by 4hp to 10hp. If that sounds like a gain you would like to benefit from, then buying a high flow cat might be the right choice for you.
